Hospitals and health systems are accelerating ASC investments amid growing pressures, annual survey reveals
WESTCHESTER, ILLINOIS – The 6th annual national survey commissioned by Avanza Strategies, a leading expert on ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and outpatient services, found most hospitals and health systems own at least one ASC and plan to continue expanding their surgery center portfolios. Facing growing pressures on multiple fronts, they increasingly view ASCs as essential to their long-term outpatient strategy.
This annual Intelligence survey of senior healthcare executives and clinical leaders, available here, was conducted on Avanza’s behalf by HealthLeaders Media. It provides a look into hospital and health system leaders’ perspectives on ASCs. This year’s survey highlights the ever-growing significance of ASCs for hospital systems. Respondents cite several key factors driving this trend, including the shift of surgeries to outpatient settings, payor pressures, rising consumer demand, cost reduction efforts, and the need to strengthen physician relationships.
Key findings include:
- Hospital and health system ownership of ASCs has become the standard, with over 80% now owning at least one.
- ASC investments have become a core part of health system strategy, with nine out of 10 hospitals and health systems planning to continue expanding and affiliating with them.
- As the ASC market matures, hospitals are moving toward internal management, with fewer relying on third-party managers or attempting to manage surgery centers on their own.
Avanza Founder Joan Dentler notes, “It comes as no surprise to see our new survey indicate that hospitals and health systems are expanding their ASC networks to meet growing demand from payors, physicians, and patients for high-efficiency, cost-effective surgical care. Many are moving beyond a single ASC, strategically increasing their footprint to align with evolving surgical needs and market dynamics.”
Avanza President Steve Mason adds, “ASCs have firmly established themselves as a cornerstone of modern healthcare, delivering top-tier outcomes and exceptional patient satisfaction. As more surgeries move out of inpatient settings, hospitals and health systems are turning to ASCs to expand access, reduce costs, and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving landscape.”
