6th Avanza Intelligence Hospital Leadership ASC Survey

Avanza Healthcare Strategies is pleased to share the results of the 6th Avanza Intelligence Hospital Leadership ASC Survey. We extend our thanks to everyone who participated, with special appreciation to HealthLeaders Media for once again leading the survey efforts. The 2024 findings highlight the continued growth and evolution of the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) industry, underscoring how a maturing and expanding market is reshaping execution strategies.

Here are some key takeaways from this year’s survey.

ASC ownership is now the standard across hospital systems

In 2024, more than 80% of hospitals and health systems own at least one ASC — nearly double the rate from 2019. The pressure to expand outpatient surgery capacity has intensified, especially in competitive markets and states revising certificate of need (CON) laws.

ASC investments are accelerating and central to hospital system strategy

Nine out of 10 hospitals and health systems plan to increase ASC investments and affiliations, driven by developments like shifts to outpatient care, consumer demand, and competitive pressures. This upward trend has grown steadily since the Intelligence survey’s inception.

Hospital systems prioritize ownership and operational control

The survey shows a strong preference for majority ownership, with roughly two-thirds of respondents indicating their hospital or health system owns at least 50% of its ASC partnership. While hospitals seek control, many are also willing to allow physicians operational autonomy, helping maintain engagement and efficiency as well as supporting long-term growth.

Internal ASC management is on the rise

As the market matures, hospitals are increasingly bringing ASC management in-house. This year, 54% reported managing their ASCs internally, often supplementing their in-house teams with external advisory and administrative services — an approach that enhances responsiveness, controls costs, and maintains alignment with broader organizational goals.

These findings reinforce the growing role of ASCs in outpatient surgical care and the evolving strategies hospitals and health systems are adopting to strengthen their positions in this dynamic market.
